As a learning tool, this versatile toy can be adapted to a child's stage of cognitive development. Preschoolers who are not ready to learn their letters can still toss the beanbags to match colors or to show they recognize the attractive pictures of objects around the perimeter of the mat. (Identifying the elephant and duck will be easy; the violin and x-ray may take a while.) The action of aiming and tossing the beanbags will facilitate motor coordination. And when letters become interesting to the child, he or she can use the beanbags to identify them, either as an individual learning exercise or in the context of a game. Some children may like using the toy to practice spelling simple words. Others will be frustrated if they can't line up the letters to make their words. --Louise Carter earned her Ph.D. in Child Development from the University of Minnesota, and has taught at preschool, elementary, and college levels.
